Scaffolder Tax Rebates

Whether you're a scaffold erector, a gang supervisor or even a construction manager, you could be owed money by HMRC. Like so many people employed in the construction industry, scaffolders often find themselves travelling for work. That means thousands of workers racking up tens of thousands of miles just to do their jobs. All that travel takes money out of your pocket. What far too many people don't realise is that they can claw cash back from the taxman to soften the blow.

The government's got huge plans for UK construction over the the coming years, but the industry's already facing a serious skills shortage. Trained scaffolders are going to be in high demand, and the UK's departure from the EU's likely to mean fewer foreign workers making up the numbers. Now more than ever, it's essential to make sure there are enough workers in the industry for it to thrive. Tax refunds have a major part to play in that. By making sure the taxman plays fair, we're putting money back into scaffolders' pockets. The more we do that, the more scaffolders we'll have.

Tax Rebates for Scaffolders

What expenses can a scaffolder claim for?

For most construction industry tax refunds, travel costs are the biggest factor. The HMRC rules for work travel let you claim back tax when you're paying to get to temporary workplaces. In general, that means anywhere you're working for under 24 months. It makes no difference if you're using your own vehicle or public transport to travel. Either way, your costs can count toward the tax relief you can claim.

Another point people miss is that you can still claim tax back even if your employer's giving you something for your travel. HMRC has set out Approved Mileage Allowance Payments that state what you're entitled to get. If you're getting less than the full amount per mile from your employer, you can claim the difference back from the taxman.

Tax refunds aren't just for travel costs, either. If you wear a uniform or specialised clothing to work, you might be paying to clean, repair or replace it. It's the same for any small tools or safety gear you use. All these costs might seem fairly small at the time, but they mount up over the years. If you aren't claiming the tax back you're owed for them, then you're actually cheating yourself out of your own money. Even things like subscriptions to professional bodies can contribute toward your tax refunds. For instance, your Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme card fees are a necessary part of your job. That means they qualify you for some tax relief when you're paying them.

Being Self Employed

Does it matter if I'm self employed?

The way you claim tax back that you're owed when you're self-employed is slightly different, but you still qualify. RIFT has a specialist Construction Industry Scheme team to help with this. Under CIS, you're already paying out 20% of your earnings before you get them. That can easily mean you're paying too much tax each year, without the full benefit of your personal Allowance.

Also, self-employment often involves splashing out money just to stay in business. All those essential costs can count against the income you're taxed on when you file your Self Assessment returns. If you aren't claiming all the expenses you're allowed to, you're missing out badly.
