If my assignment order says 3 years, but I leave after 18 months, can I claim?
No. HMRC criteria for travel to work claims applies to temporary places of work. If you expect to spend 3 years at a location it is not considered temporary.
Can I claim for going on course?
Potentially, yes. However, the location and duration of the course, as well as the type of course you attend will determine whether a claim can be made.
Is there a minimum distance I need to travel to claim?
Yes, if a temporary location is only a few miles away it will still be considered as being in the same location. For example, units in different barracks in the same garrison count as the same location.
Can I still claim if I have received GYH, HTD or MMA?
Yes. This is a common reason why serving members of the Military miss out on a potential mileage claim. GYH, HTD and MMA are paid at a lower level than the claim allowance permitted by HMRC. A claim can still be submitted if you meet the criteria, for the difference between the claim allowance, as well as for other elements such as food and accommodation.
Can I claim more than once?
There is no limit to the number of times you can make a claim, as long as you qualify. Claims can only be submitted for recent years. So don’t leave it too long or you may miss out.
Surely the Pay Office will tell me if I can make a claim?
No. Tax is a complex area, and RIFT tax specialists undergo detailed training to qualify to advise you appropriately and in line with up to date HMRC criteria.
RIFT take ownership for any advice we give, and should your claim be challenged by HMRC at any stage, RIFT will act on your behalf to defend the claim at no charge as part of the RIFT guarantee.
How long does the RIFT guarantee last?
The RIFT guarantee applies to all clients we have supported with a successful claim. In the unlikely event that subsequent questions or issues arise with HMRC we will act on your behalf at no extra cost, regardless of when they occur or how long it takes to support you.
What evidence do I need to supply?
Evidence needed will vary according to your claim. However, we would typically start with your payslips as proof of occupation and location, and then advise you further on any other evidence needed.
How do I make a claim?
The start point is to confirm for definite whether you qualify for a claim by answering 3 simple questions.
A RIFT tax specialist will then contact you and advise you of the specific areas of your employment for which you are able to claim.
