5: Simon & Garfunkel

Quietly understated but poetically powerful, the physically tiny Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were nevertheless giants of the music scene for decades. Now with an on-again-off-again partnership spanning half a century, you’d have a hard time begrudging them a spot on this list.

4: Daft Punk

For a complete change of pace, this electronic dance music duo from France have fused techno, funk, something called “synthpop” and about half a dozen other styles into something genuinely unique. They don’t look like anyone else, they don’t sound like anything else and their use of costumes and outrageous visuals in their performance truly sets them apart. 3: The White Stripes

Another double-dose of musical weirdness, the duo of former real-life spouses Jack and Meg White tore through the alternative rock scene from 1997 to 2011 with a raw and stripped-down style complemented by wildly eccentric vocals. Seven Nation Army alone justifies their slot here.

2: Eurythmics

The pop duo of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart is a pure 80s classic pairing. With elements of punk, new wave and rock, Eurythmics’ second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) took the world by storm – and now that we’ve reminded you of the title song it’ll be stuck in your head all day. You’re welcome.

1: Chas & Dave

When you’re talking musical duos, you really can’t go wrong with a spot of Chas & Dave. In an industry that all-too-often takes itself way too seriously, these two “rockney” knockabouts were a much-needed touch of genuine heart. Charles Nicholas Hodges and David Victor Peacock first recorded as Chas & Dave in 1973, but their partnership lasted right up until 2018 (with a brief hiccup from 2009-11). Now that’s a proper team-up, and it wins them the top spot in our countdown. Disagree? Well, there Ain’t No Pleasing You. Now Gertcha!
