Why Do I Need A Personal Tax Account?

Personal Tax Accounts are a secure service from HMRC

They're designed to give you more access and control over your personal information, whatever you need it for. It's as easy and secure as online banking.

The scheme is part of HMRC's big plan to make getting all individuals and businesses handling their tax online by April 2020.

One benefit of Personal Tax Accounts is you can stop worrying about all those P45s and P60s you need for your tax refund claims. Instead of having to keep all your paperwork safe for years you can just log in and quickly see everything you need including what you've earned and the tax you've paid on it for the last 4 tax years. 

You can claim a tax refund for the last 4 tax years, so most people get a refund for 4 full years the first time they make a claim with us. The average first refund is worth £2,500 so the easier it is to get that back, the better.

How do I set up my Personal Tax Account?

Registering for an account is free and only takes 5-10 minutes.

To get started with the system, you'll need to grab a few things. First of all, dig out:

  • Your National Insurance number.
  • Either a recent payslip,
  • or a valid UK Passport
  • or your most recent P60.

Here's a quick overview if you're ready to get started right away:

  • You'll need to enter your name and e-mail address to receive your automatically generated Government Gateway user ID.

  • Once you've got your ID you'll then be asked to complete a 2-step verification process for added security when you come to login. The system will ask you to provide a mobile or landline number to which an access code will be sent each time you sign in to confirm your identity.

  • Once you have completed the 2-step verification, you will be asked some security questions based on your passport, recent payslip and P60, so have these to hand.

  • Once verification is complete you can use all of the services available within your account.

Is my information safe with a personal tax account?

Your information is kept safe behind the highest levels of security.

The Personal Tax Account Services are only available to customers who register their details.

Every time you log in, you will need to enter your User ID and password before you can access your services.

If you’ve forgotten to log out of your online service HMRC take care of this for you. After 15 minutes of inactivity you will be automatically logged out. But it’s a good idea to close your internet browser when leaving any secure website.

HMRC uses firewall protection as a very effective high security barrier around its systems and your data. This detects any attempts at unauthorised entry.

The information you send to HMRC via the internet, and that you can read on the page, is encrypted and when you log in to the online services you are always protected. There is usually a a way  to see this in your browser, for example by a padlock in the address bar.

As an additional security measure you'll be able to see the date and time that you last logged in to your account once you have entered your User ID and password. If you see anything that looks wrong you'll be able to report it to HMRC through the site.

What else can I do with my personal tax account?

HMRC is adding more options all the time to the service. Right now, you can already:

  • Check your Income Tax estimate
  • Easily check your tax code so you can let us know if there are any issues.
  • Check and manage your tax credits.
  • Check your State Pension.
  • Track tax forms you’ve submitted online.
  • Check or update your Marriage Allowance.
  • Tell HMRC about a change of address.
  • Check or update benefits you get from work. For example, company car details and medical insurance, which we'll need to get the most from your tax refund.
  • Find your UTR number if you're self employed.

How to get your Personal Tax Account information to us

Once you have a Personal Tax Account and you want to send us information all you need to is:

  • Login and go to the page that holds the information you need.
    If you're not sure where to find it, get in touch and we can walk you through it.
  • Send us an email.
    You can write the information in the email or take a screen shot and attach it.
    Remember to include the tax year and the name of the employer if you are sending us income information.

  • Print it out and send it to us.
    All you need to write on the envelope is ‘Freepost RIFT’.
    Remember to include your RIFT reference number.

  • Give us a call and tell us the totals over the phone.
