The various UK Tax Bands or Income Tax Rates determine how much of your income goes to HMRC each year. For most people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, there are 3 basic tax bands (or “tax brackets”) to know about: the basic rate, the higher rate and the additional rate. When your income hits the threshold for a new tax bracket, any further earnings use that bracket’s tax rate instead of the previous one. The UK Tax Bands you fall into can make a big difference to the tax you pay. That’s one of the reasons why it’s so important to double-check your tax code and make sure HMRC has your details right. If you’re confused about the tax bracket you’re in or think your tax code might be wrong, talk to RIFT. If there’s a problem, we’ll find and fix it – and make sure you get back any tax you’re owed!
