What information do I need for a security tax refund?

To claim a security tax refund, HMRC needs evidence of where you worked, what you spent and how much tax you paid. You don’t need to have everything perfect before you start, but the more information you can provide, the stronger your claim can be.

What we need from you

The taxman won’t cough up your refund without some proof of what you’re spending. Here’s what it takes to make a full tax refund claim:

  • A list of the all places you've travelled to work. Most tax refunds have some work travel costs included, so this is crucial. We'll also need to know how long you were at each of your workplaces. Exact dates and locations won’t always matter, as we can often work them out for you. Just give as us much detail as you can.
  • Receipts for expenses. Any time you’re using your own cash to buy the essentials of your work, you could claim a tax refund. This could mean laundry costs for your uniform or the application and renewal fees for your SIA licence, for instance. Keeping good records about these expenses is the key to getting back what you’re owed.
  • Contract of employment. It’s all about proving you’re owed tax back, so you’ll need to show details of every job you’ve had during the period of your claim.
  • Copy of your photo ID. A driving licence or passport would be ideal.
  • Proof of address. Utility bills or bank statements work well for this.
  • Wage slips reaching up to 4-years back. Even if you’ve never claimed before, it may not be too late to get your overpaid tax back from previous years.
  • Open banking
  • Other supporting documents. We’re talking about things like MOT certificates to support your mileage expensesP60s or P45s and so on. Don’t forget your paperwork from previous years, if you haven’t claimed your refund for those yet.

If you don't already have a Personal Tax Account (PTA)RIFT will show you how to get one set up.  PTAs don't cost anything, and they're a great way to keep all your tax information safely in one place.

Sign your 64-8 form

A 64-8 form is a legal document that appoints someone else to deal with HMRC on your behalf. This person then becomes your "agent", and can handle things like tax rebates and self assessment tax returns for you.

In other words, 64-8 is the piece of paper that lets RIFT take on the stress and hassle of tackling the taxman for you. It's the key to getting your tax rebate paid out, so get it filled in as soon as possible.

Why you need to sign a 64-8 form

Simple question, simple answer. Without form 64-8, the taxman won't even talk to us about you. If we can't get HMRC to treat us as your agent, you'll be on your own when it comes to scoring your tax refund or talking to them about any problems, enquiries or changes to your tax code.

A stronger refund starts with stronger evidence
