Security tax refunds

Security workers may be able to claim tax back for travel to temporary workplaces, mileage, SIA licence fees, uniform upkeep, essential gear, food and laundry. The average 4 year tax rebate for security workers is £2,700. It's only possible to claim for the last 4 tax years.

Can I claim a Security tax refund?

If you work in security and pay for job-related costs yourself, you could be owed tax back from HMRC.

You could claim if:

  • You travel to temporary workplaces
  • You use your own car or pay for public transport
  • You paid for your SIA licence or renewal
  • You pay to clean, repair or maintain essential uniform or safety gear
  • You pay for work-related food, travel or accommodation
  • You are employed full-time or work for yourself in security
  • You have eligible expenses from the last 4 tax years

What can't I claim for?

Not every cost will qualify. For example, everyday clothes usually don’t count, even if you wear them to work. The cost needs to be necessary for your job and backed up properly.
