Construction PAYE tax refunds

If you’re employed in construction and pay for work-related costs yourself, you could be owed tax back from HMRC.

A lot of PAYE construction workers travel to temporary sites, pay for tools, protective clothing, food, accommodation or other job-related expenses. If your employer doesn’t fully cover those costs, you may be able to claim a tax refund. It's only possible to claim for the last 4 tax years.

What if I've only worked part of the year?

You could still be owed tax back. PAYE tax is often calculated as if you’ll earn steadily across the full tax year. If you stop working, change jobs or your income drops, you may have paid more tax than you needed to.
